Chapter: The Prohibition Of Using Vessels Of Gold And Silver For Drinking Etc., For Men And Women

باب تَحْرِيمِ أَوَانِي الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ فِي الشُّرْبِ وَغَيْرِهِ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ ‏‏

Umm Salama, the wife of Allah's Apostle (ﷺ), said:He who drinks in the vessel of silver in fact drinks down in his belly the fire of Hell.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ الَّذِي يَشْرَبُ فِي آنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ إِنَّمَا يُجَرْجِرُ فِي بَطْنِهِ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 2

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Using Vessels Of Gold And Silver For Men And Women, And Gold Rings And Silk For Men, But They Are Permissible For Women. Permissibility Of Silken Borders On Garments For Men, But It Should Not Be More Than Four Fingers Wide

باب تَحْرِيمِ اسْتِعْمَالِ إِنَاءِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَخَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْحَرِيرِ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ وَإِبَاحَتِهِ لِلنِّسَاءِ وَإِبَاحَةِ الْعَلَمِ وَنَحْوِهِ لِلرَّجُلِ مَا لَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَى أَرْبَعِ أَصَابِعَ

This hadith has been narrated through other chains of transmitters. The hadith of Ibn Mushir on the authority of 'Ubaidullah it is as:He who eats or drinks in the vessel of silver and gold, - but there is no mention in any one of the other chains of the words pertaining to eating and gold.

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ قُتَيْبَةُ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رُمْحٍ، عَنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، السَّعْدِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ عُلَيَّةَ - عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ، بْنُ بِشْرٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي، شَيْبَةَ وَالْوَلِيدُ بْنُ شُجَاعٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ، أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ، ح . وَحَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ حَازِمٍ - عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، السَّرَّاجِ كُلُّ هَؤُلاَءِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ، ‏.‏ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ بِإِسْنَادِهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ، وَزَادَ، فِي حَدِيثِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُسْهِرٍ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏ أَنَّ الَّذِي، يَأْكُلُ أَوْ يَشْرَبُ فِي آنِيَةِ الْفِضَّةِ وَالذَّهَبِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ وَلَيْسَ فِي حَدِيثِ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ ذِكْرُ الأَكْلِ وَالذَّهَبِ إِلاَّ فِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ مُسْهِرٍ ‏.‏

Chapter 3

Chapter: The Permissibility Of Wearing Silk For Men, If A Man Has A Skin Disease Or Similar Problem

باب إِبَاحَةِ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ لِلرَّجُلِ إِذَا كَانَ بِهِ حِكَّةٌ أَوْ نَحْوُهَا ‏‏

Abd al-Rahman reported on the authority of his mother's sister Umm Salama who said that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:He who drank in vessels of gold or silver he in fact drank down in his belly the fire of Hell.

وَحَدَّثَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَبُو مَعْنٍ الرَّقَاشِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُرَّةَ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ خَالَتِهِ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ مَنْ شَرِبَ فِي إِنَاءٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ أَوْ فِضَّةٍ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَرْجِرُ فِي بَطْنِهِ نَارًا مِنْ جَهَنَّمَ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 4

Chapter: The Prohibition Of A Man Wearing A Garment Dyed With Safflower

باب النَّهْىِ عَنْ لُبْسِ الرَّجُلِ الثَّوْبَ الْمُعَصْفَرَ، ‏‏

Mu'awiya b. Suwaid b. Muqarrin reporxed:I visited al-Bara' b. 'Azib and heard him say: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) commanded us to do seven things and forbade us to do seven (things). He commanded us to visit the sick, to follow the funeral procession, to answer the sneezer, to fulfil the vow, to help the poor, to accept the invitation and to greet everybody, and he forbade us to wear rings or gold rings, to drink in silver (vessels), and to use the saddle cloth made of red silk, and to wear garments made of Qassi material, or garments made of silk or brocade and velvet.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى التَّمِيمِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَشْعَثُ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سُوَيْدِ، بْنِ مُقَرِّنٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِسَبْعٍ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ سَبْعٍ أَمَرَنَا بِعِيَادَةِ الْمَرِيضِ وَاتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَازَةِ وَتَشْمِيتِ الْعَاطِسِ وَإِبْرَارِ الْقَسَمِ أَوِ الْمُقْسِمِ وَنَصْرِ الْمَظْلُومِ وَإِجَابَةِ الدَّاعِي وَإِفْشَاءِ السَّلاَمِ ‏.‏ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ خَوَاتِيمَ أَوْ عَنْ تَخَتُّمٍ بِالذَّهَبِ وَعَنْ شُرْبٍ بِالْفِضَّةِ وَعَنِ الْمَيَاثِرِ وَعَنِ الْقَسِّيِّ وَعَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ وَالإِسْتَبْرَقِ وَالدِّيبَاجِ ‏.‏

Chapter 5

Chapter: The Virtue Of Wearing The Hibarah

باب فَضْلِ لِبَاسِ ثِيَابِ الْحِبَرَةِ ‏‏

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Ash'ath b. Sulaim with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight change of wording that he made no mention of:" to fulfil the vows" but substituted these words:" finding of the lost articles".

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ الْعَتَكِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ إِلاَّ قَوْلَهُ وَإِبْرَارِ الْقَسَمِ أَوِ الْمُقْسِمِ ‏.‏ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ هَذَا الْحَرْفَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ وَجَعَلَ مَكَانَهُ وَإِنْشَادِ الضَّالِّ ‏.‏

Chapter 6

Chapter: Humility In Dress And Sticking To Coarse And Simple Clothes, Furnishings Etc., Permissibility Of Wearing Clothes Made From Camel Hair And Those On Which There Are Markings

بَاب التَّوَاضُعِ فِي اللِّبَاسِ وَالِاقْتِصَارِ عَلَى الْغَلِيظِ مِنْهُ وَالْيَسِيرِ فِي اللِّبَاسِ وَالْفِرَاشِ وَغَيْرِهِمَا

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ash'ath b. Abu ashSha'tha' with the same chain of transmitters (and with these words):There is no doubt about the words: To fulfil the vows were mentioned and this addition had been made in the. hadith: (The Holy Prophet) forbade drinking in silver vessels, for one who drinks (in them) in this world would not drink (in them) in the Hereafter.

وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُسْهِرٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي، شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ الشَّيْبَانِيِّ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ ‏.‏ مِثْلَ حَدِيثِ زُهَيْرٍ وَقَالَ إِبْرَارِ الْقَسَمِ مِنْ غَيْرِ شَكٍّ وَزَادَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ وَعَنِ الشُّرْبِ فِي الْفِضَّةِ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ شَرِبَ فِيهَا فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَشْرَبْ فِيهَا فِي الآخِرَةِ ‏.‏

Chapter 7

Chapter: The Permissibility Of Using Blankets

باب جَوَازِ اتِّخَاذِ الأَنْمَاطِ ‏‏

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ash'ath b. Sulaim with the same chain of transmitters but with this difference that instead of the words:Ifsha as-Salam (spreading the salutations), he substituted the words Radd as-Saldm (i. e. responding to the words of salutation) and he said: He forbade (the use of) gold ring.

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، وَلَيْثُ بْنُ، أَبِي سُلَيْمٍ عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ، بِإِسْنَادِهِمْ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ زِيَادَةَ جَرِيرٍ وَابْنِ مُسْهِرٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَابْنُ، بَشَّارٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ، مُعَاذٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ح، وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ الْعَقَدِيُّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ، الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، قَالُوا جَمِيعًا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ، بِإِسْنَادِهِمْ وَمَعْنَى حَدِيثِهِمْ إِلاَّ قَوْلَهُ وَإِفْشَاءِ السَّلاَمِ ‏.‏ فَإِنَّهُ قَالَ بَدَلَهَا وَرَدِّ السَّلاَمِ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ نَهَانَا عَنْ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ أَوْ حَلْقَةِ الذَّهَبِ ‏.‏

Chapter 8

Chapter: It Is Disliked To Have More Furniture And Bedding Than One Needs

باب كَرَاهَةِ مَا زَادَ عَلَى الْحَاجَةِ مِنَ الْفِرَاشِ وَاللِّبَاسِ ‏‏

This hadith has been narrated on the auttiniity of Ash'ath b. Sulaim with the same chain of transmitters but the words (pertaining to) Ifsha as-Salam and the (use) of gold ring have been reported without doubt.

وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَشْعَثَ بْنِ أَبِي الشَّعْثَاءِ، بِإِسْنَادِهِمْ وَقَالَ وَإِفْشَاءِ السَّلاَمِ وَخَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ ‏.‏ مِنْ غَيْرِ شَكٍّ ‏.‏

Chapter 9

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Letting One's Garment Drag Out Of Pride, And The Extent To Which It Is Permissible To Let It Hang Down And The Extent To Which It Is Recommended

باب تَحْرِيمِ جَرِّ الثَّوْبِ خُيَلاَءَ وَبَيَانِ حَدِّ مَا يَجُوزُ إِرْخَاؤُهُ إِلَيْهِ وَمَا يُسْتَحَبّ

'Abdullah b. Ukaim reported:While we were with Hudhaifa in Mada'in he asked for water. A villager brought a drink for him in a silver vessel. He (Hudhaifa) threw it away saying: I inform you that I have already conveyed to him that he should not serve me drink in it (silver vessel) for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said: Do not drink in gold and silver vessels, and do not wear brocade or silk, for these are meant for them (the non-believers) in this world, but they are meant for you in the Hereafter on the Day, of Resurrection.

حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ سَهْلِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، سَمِعْتُهُ يَذْكُرُهُ، عَنْ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُكَيْمٍ، قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ حُذَيْفَةَ بِالْمَدَائِنِ فَاسْتَسْقَى حُذَيْفَةُ فَجَاءَهُ دِهْقَانٌ بِشَرَابٍ فِي إِنَاءٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَرَمَاهُ بِهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّي أُخْبِرُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ أَمَرْتُهُ أَنْ لاَ يَسْقِيَنِي فِيهِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ لاَ تَشْرَبُوا فِي إِنَاءِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَلاَ تَلْبَسُوا الدِّيبَاجَ وَالْحَرِيرَ فَإِنَّهُ لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَهُوَ لَكُمْ فِي الآخِرَةِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 10

Chapter: The Prohibition Against Strutting With Pride, And Being Amazed With One's Clothes

باب تَحْرِيمِ التَّبَخْتُرِ فِي الْمَشْىِ مَعَ إِعْجَابِهِ بِثِيَابِهِ ‏‏

This hadith has been reported on the authority of `Abdullah b. `Ukaim with a slight variation of wording.

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي فَرْوَةَ الْجُهَنِيِّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُكَيْمٍ يَقُولُ كُنَّا عِنْدَ حُذَيْفَةَ بِالْمَدَائِنِ ‏.‏ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ ‏ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 11

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Gold Rings For Men, And Abrogation Of Their Allowance After The Beginning Of Islam

بَاب تَحْرِيمِ خَاتَمِ الذَّهَبِ عَلَى الرِّجَالِ وَنَسْخِ مَا كَانَ مِنْ إِبَاحَتِهِ فِي أَوَّلِ الْإِسْلَامِ

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of lbn `Ukaim through another chain of transmitters, but in this hadith no mention is made of the words:"On the Day of Resurrection"

وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ الْعَلاَءِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، أَوَّلاً عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، ثُمَّ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، سَمِعَهُ مِنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، ثُمَّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو فَرْوَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُكَيْمٍ، فَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّ ابْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى، إِنَّمَا سَمِعَهُ مِنِ ابْنِ، عُكَيْمٍ قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ حُذَيْفَةَ بِالْمَدَائِنِ ‏.‏ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَهُ وَلَمْ يَقُلْ ‏ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 12

Chapter: The Prophet (SAW) Wore A Ring Of Silver On Which Was Inscribed The Words Muhammad Rasul Allah (Muhammad the Messenger of Allah), And The Caliphs Wore It After He Died

بَاب لُبْسِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ وَرِقٍ نَقْشُهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَلُبْسِ الْخُلَفَاءِ لَهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ

Shu'ba reported from al-Hakam that he heard 'Abd al-Rahmin (i. e. Ibn Abu Laila) as saying:I personally saw Hudhaifa asking for water in Mada'in and a man giving it to him in a silver vessel. The rest of the hadith is the same.

وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ الْعَنْبَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى - قَالَ شَهِدْتُ حُذَيْفَةَ اسْتَسْقَى بِالْمَدَائِنِ فَأَتَاهُ إِنْسَانٌ بِإِنَاءٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ ‏.‏ فَذَكَرَهُ بِمَعْنَى حَدِيثِ ابْنِ عُكَيْمٍ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ‏.‏

Chapter 13

Chapter: The Prophet (SAW) Acquired A Ring When He Wanted To Send Letters To The Non-Arabs

باب فِي اتِّخَاذِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم خَاتَمًا لَمَّا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَكْتُبَ إِلَى الْعَجَمِ ‏‏

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Shu`ba through another chain of transmitters. But there is no mention of "I personally saw him" in this hadith.

وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَابْنُ، بَشَّارٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ بِشْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ، كُلُّهُمْ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، ‏.‏ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ مُعَاذٍ وَإِسْنَادِهِ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ فِي الْحَدِيثِ شَهِدْتُ حُذَيْفَةَ ‏.‏ غَيْرُ مُعَاذٍ وَحْدَهُ إِنَّمَا قَالُوا إِنَّ حُذَيْفَةَ اسْتَسْقَى.‏

Chapter 14

Chapter: Discarding Rings

باب فِي طَرْحِ الْخَوَاتِمِ ‏.‏

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Hudhaila with the same chain of transmitters.

Chapter 15

Chapter: Silver Ring With An Abyssinian Stone

باب فِي خَاتَمِ الْوَرِقِ فَصُّهُ حَبَشِيٌّ ‏.‏

'Abd al-Rahmin b. Abu Laili reported that Hudhaifa asked for water and a Magian gave him water in a silver vessel, whereupon he said:I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Do not wear silk or brocade and do not drink ifi vessels of gold and silver, and do not eat in the dishes made of them (i. e. gold and silver), for these are for them (the non-believers) in this world.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا سَيْفٌ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُجَاهِدًا، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ أَبِي لَيْلَى، قَالَ اسْتَسْقَى حُذَيْفَةُ فَسَقَاهُ مَجُوسِيٌّ فِي إِنَاءٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ لاَ تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ وَلاَ الدِّيبَاجَ وَلاَ تَشْرَبُوا فِي آنِيَةِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ وَلاَ تَأْكُلُوا فِي صِحَافِهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 16

Chapter: Wearing Rings On The Little Finger

باب فِي لُبْسِ الْخَاتَمِ فِي الْخِنْصَرِ مِنَ الْيَدِ ‏.‏

Ibn Umar reported that Umar b. Khattab saw (some one selling) the garments of silk at the door of the mosque, whereupon he said:Allah's Messenger, would that you buy it and wear it for the people on Friday and for (receiving) the delegations when they come to you? Upon this. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: go who wears it has no share (of reward) in the Hereafter. Then these garments were sent to Allah" s Messenger (ﷺ), and he presented one of these silk garment to Umar. Thereupon Umar said: You make me wear (this silk garment) Whereas you said about the silk garment of Utarid (the person who had been busy selling this garment at the door of the mosque) what you had to say, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: I have not presented you this for wearing it (but to make use of its price) ; so 'Umar presented it to his polytheist brother in Mecca.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَ هَذِهِ فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِلنَّاسِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ جَاءَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَأَعْطَى عُمَرَ مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا ‏ ‏.‏ فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مُشْرِكًا بِمَكَّةَ ‏.‏

Chapter 17

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Wearing Rings On The Middle Finger And The One That Is Next To It

باب النَّهْىِ عَنِ التَّخَتُّمِ، فِي الْوُسْطَى وَالَّتِي تَلِيهَا ‏.‏

This hadith has been narrated by Ibn Umar through another chain of transmitters.

وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ح، وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، كُلُّهُمْ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنِي سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ، عُمَرَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِنَحْوِ حَدِيثِ مَالِكٍ ‏.‏

Chapter 18

Chapter: It Is Recommended To Wear Sandals et

بَاب اسْتِحْبَابِ لُبْسِ النِّعَالِ وَمَا فِي مَعْنَاهَا

Ibn Umar reported that Umar saw Utarid al-Tamimi standing in the market (and selling) the silk garments, and he was the person who went to (courts of) kings and got (high prices) for these garments from them. Umar said:Allah's Messenger I saw 'Utarid standing in the market with a silk garment; would that you buy and wear it for (receiving) the delegations of Arabs when they visit you? I (the narrator) said: I think he ('Umar) also said: You may wear it on Friday (also). Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) said: He who wears silk in this world has no share in the Hereafter. Later on when these silk garments were presented to Allah's Massenger (ﷺ) he presented one silk garment to 'Umar and presented one also to Usama b. Zaid and gave one to 'Ali b. Abu 'Talib. saying: Tear them and make head coverings for your ladies. 'Umar came carrying his garment and said: Allah's Messenger, you have sent it to me, whereas you had said yesterday about the (silk) garment of Utarid what you had to say. He (the Holy Prophet) said: I have not sent it to you that you wear it, but I have sent It to you so that you may derive benefit out of it; and Usama (donned) the garment (presented to him) and appeared to be brisk, whereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) looked at him with a look by which he perceived that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not like what he had done. He said: Allah's Messenger. why is it that you look at me like this. whereas you yourself presented it to me? He said: I never sent it to you to wear it, but I sent It to you so that you may tear it and make out head covering for your ladies.

وَحَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ رَأَى عُمَرُ عُطَارِدًا التَّمِيمِيَّ يُقِيمُ بِالسُّوقِ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ - وَكَانَ رَجُلاً يَغْشَى الْمُلُوكَ وَيُصِيبُ مِنْهُمْ - فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ عُطَارِدًا يُقِيمُ فِي السُّوقِ حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ فَلَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا فَلَبِسْتَهَا لِوُفُودِ الْعَرَبِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ - وَأَظُنُّهُ قَالَ وَلَبِسْتَهَا يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ - فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ فِي الدُّنْيَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ‏ ‏.‏ فَلَمَّا كَانَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِحُلَلٍ سِيَرَاءَ فَبَعَثَ إِلَى عُمَرَ بِحُلَّةٍ وَبَعَثَ إِلَى أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ بِحُلَّةٍ وَأَعْطَى عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ حُلَّةً وَقَالَ ‏ شَقِّقْهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ بِحُلَّتِهِ يَحْمِلُهَا فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بَعَثْتَ إِلَىَّ بِهَذِهِ وَقَدْ قُلْتَ بِالأَمْسِ فِي حُلَّةِ عُطَارِدٍ مَا قُلْتَ فَقَالَ ‏ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنِّي بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتُصِيبَ بِهَا ‏ ‏.‏ وَأَمَّا أُسَامَةُ فَرَاحَ فِي حُلَّتِهِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَظَرًا عَرَفَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَدْ أَنْكَرَ مَا صَنَعَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا تَنْظُرُ إِلَىَّ فَأَنْتَ بَعَثْتَ إِلَىَّ بِهَا فَقَالَ ‏ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا وَلَكِنِّي بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتُشَقِّقَهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ نِسَائِكَ ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 19

Chapter: It Is Recommended To Put Shoes On The Right Foot First, And To Take Them Off From The Left Foot First, And It Is Disliked To Walk In One Shoe

بَاب اسْتِحْبَابِ لُبْسِ النَّعْلِ فِي الْيُمْنَى أَوَّلًا وَالْخَلْعِ مِنْ الْيُسْرَى أَوَّلًا وَكَرَاهَةِ الْمَشْيِ فِي نَعْلٍ وَاحِدَةٍ

Abdullah b. Umar reported:'Umar b. at-Khattab found a silk garment being sold in the market; he purchased it and brought it to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger, get it and adorn yourself (by wearing it) on the 'Id (days) and for the delegation. Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: That is the dress of one who has no share (in the Hereafter). 'Umar stayed there so long as Allah wished. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent him a silk cloak. 'Umar came back with that to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger. you said that it is the dress of one who has no share in the Hereafter, but then you sent it to me. Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: You sell it and meet your need (with its proceeds).

وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الطَّاهِرِ، وَحَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، - وَاللَّفْظُ لِحَرْمَلَةَ - قَالاَ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ، وَهْبٍ أَخْبَرَنِي يُونُسُ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، قَالَ وَجَدَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ حُلَّةً مِنْ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ تُبَاعُ بِالسُّوقِ فَأَخَذَهَا فَأَتَى بِهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ فَتَجَمَّلْ بِهَا لِلْعِيدِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ لِبَاسُ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ فَلَبِثَ عُمَرُ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ .‏ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِجُبَّةِ دِيبَاجٍ فَأَقْبَلَ بِهَا عُمَرُ حَتَّى أَتَى بِهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قُلْتَ ‏ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ لِبَاسُ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ‏ ‏.‏ أَوْ ‏ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْتَ إِلَىَّ بِهَذِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ تَبِيعُهَا وَتُصِيبُ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 20

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Ishtimal As-Samma' (Wrapping Oneself Up Entirely In One's Garment With No Room For The Arms To Emerge), And Al-Ihtiba' (Wrapping Oneself Up) In A Single Garment With The Legs Drawn Up To The Belly Exposing Part Of The 'Awrah

باب النَّهْىِ عَنِ اشْتِمَالِ الصَّمَّاءِ، وَالاِحْتِبَاءِ، فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ ‏.‏

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Shihab with the same chain of transmitters.

وَحَدَّثَنَا هَارُونُ بْنُ مَعْرُوفٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ ‏.‏

Chapter 21

Chapter: The Ruling On Lying On Ones Back With One Leg On Top Of The Other

باب فِي مَنْعِ الاِسْتِلْقَاءِ عَلَى الظَّهْرِ وَوَضْعِ إِحْدَى الرِّجْلَيْنِ عَلَى الأُخْرَى ‏.‏

lbn 'Umar reported that 'Umar saw a person of the tribe of 'Utirid selling a garment made of brocade or silk and said to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ):Would that you buy it? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: He who wears it has no share for him in the Hereafter. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was presented with a striped silk garment and he sent it to him ('Umar). He (, Umar) said: You sent it to me whereas I heard from you about it what you had to say, whereupon he (Allah's Messenger) said: I sent it to you so that you may benefit by it.

حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ، حَفْصٍ عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، رَأَى عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ آلِ عُطَارِدٍ قَبَاءً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أَوْ حَرِيرٍ فَقَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهُ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذَا مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ‏ ‏.‏ فَأُهْدِيَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حُلَّةٌ سِيَرَاءُ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهَا إِلَىَّ ‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتُ أَرْسَلْتَ بِهَا إِلَىَّ وَقَدْ سَمِعْتُكَ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ ‏ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَسْتَمْتِعَ بِهَا ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 22

Chapter: The Permissibility Of Lying Down And Placing One Leg On Top Of The Other

باب فِي إِبَاحَةِ الاِسْتِلْقَاءِ وَوَضْعِ إِحْدَى الرِّجْلَيْنِ عَلَى الأُخْرَى ‏.‏

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Umar through another chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording (and the words are that the Holy Prophet) said:I sent it to you so that you might derive benefit from it. but I did not send it to you to wear it.

وَحَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ حَفْصٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ، بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَأَى عَلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ آلِ عُطَارِدٍ ‏.‏ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَنْتَفِعَ بِهَا وَلَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 23

Chapter: The Prohibition Of A Man Dyeing From With Saffron

بَاب نَهْيِ الرَّجُلِ عَنْ التَّزَعْفُرِ

Ibn 'Umar reported that 'Umar saw a person with a garment of brocade and he brought it to Allah's Apostle (may peace he upon him) -the rest of the hadith is the same, except for the words that he (the Holy Prophet) said:I sent it to you that you might get money thereby.

حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يُحَدِّثُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ قَالَ لِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي الإِسْتَبْرَقِ قَالَ قُلْتُ مَا غَلُظَ مِنَ الدِّيبَاجِ وَخَشُنَ مِنْهُ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ رَأَى عُمَرُ عَلَى رَجُلٍ حُلَّةً مِنْ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ فَأَتَى بِهَا النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏ فَذَكَرَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِهِمْ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَقَالَ ‏ إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتُصِيبَ بِهَا مَالاً ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 24

Chapter: It Is Recommended To Dye White Hair With Yellow Or Red Dye, But Black Dye Is Haram

بَاب اسْتِحْبَابِ خِضَابِ الشَّيْبِ بِصُفْرَةٍ أَوْ حُمْرَةٍ وَتَحْرِيمِهِ بِالسَّوَادِ

Abdullah. the freed slave of Asma' (the daughter of Abu Bakr). the maternal uncle of the son of 'Ata, reported:Asma' sent me to 'Abdullah b. 'Umar saying: The news has reached me that you prohibit the use of three things: the striped robe. saddle cloth made of red silk. and the fasting in the holy month of Rajab. 'Abdullah said to me: So far as what you say about fasting in the month of Rajab, how about one who observes continuous fasting? -and so far as what you say about the striped garment, I heard Umar b. Khatab say that he had heard from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ): He who wears silk garment has no share for him (in the Hereafter), and I am afraid it may not be that striped garment; and so far as the red saddle clotb is concerned that is the saddle cloth of Abdullah and it is red. I went back to Asma' and informed her. whereupon she said: Here is the cloak of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). and she brought out to me that cloak made of Persian cloth with a hem of brocade, and its sleeves bordered with brocade and said: This wall Allah's Messenger's cloak with 'A'isha until she died, and when she died. I got possession of it. The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) used to wear that, and we waslied it for the sick and sought cure thereby.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، مَوْلَى أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ خَالَ وَلَدِ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ أَرْسَلَتْنِي أَسْمَاءُ إِلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ فَقَالَتْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّكَ تُحَرِّمُ أَشْيَاءَ ثَلاَثَةً الْعَلَمَ فِي الثَّوْبِ وَمِيثَرَةَ الأُرْجُوَانِ وَصَوْمَ رَجَبٍ كُلِّهِ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ أَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ مِنْ رَجَبٍ فَكَيْفَ بِمَنْ يَصُومُ الأَبَدَ وَأَمَّا مَا ذَكَرْتَ مِنَ الْعَلَمِ فِي الثَّوْبِ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ فَخِفْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ الْعَلَمُ مِنْهُ وَأَمَّا مِيثَرَةُ الأُرْجُوَانِ فَهَذِهِ مِيثَرَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَإِذَا هِيَ أُرْجُوَانٌ ‏.‏ فَرَجَعْتُ إِلَى أَسْمَاءَ فَخَبَّرْتُهَا فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ جُبَّةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏ فَأَخْرَجَتْ إِلَىَّ جُبَّةَ طَيَالَسَةٍ كِسْرَوَانِيَّةً لَهَا لِبْنَةُ دِيبَاجٍ وَفَرْجَيْهَا مَكْفُوفَيْنِ بِالدِّيبَاجِ فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ كَانَتْ عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ حَتَّى قُبِضَتْ فَلَمَّا قُبِضَتْ قَبَضْتُهَا وَكَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَلْبَسُهَا فَنَحْنُ نَغْسِلُهَا لِلْمَرْضَى يُسْتَشْفَى بِهَا ‏.‏

Chapter 25

Chapter: Differing From The Jews With Regard To Dyeing

باب فِي مُخَالَفَةِ الْيَهُودِ فِي الصَّبْغِ ‏.‏

Khalifa b. Ka'b AbCi Dhubyan reported:I heard 'Abdullah b. Zubair addressing the people and saying: Behold! do not dress yuor women with silk clothes for I heard 'Umar b. Khattab as sayinp that he had heard Allah's messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Do not wear silk, for one who wear it in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ خَلِيفَةَ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، أَبِي ذُبْيَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، يَخْطُبُ يَقُولُ أَلاَ لاَ تُلْبِسُوا نِسَاءَكُمُ الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ لاَ تَلْبَسُوا الْحَرِيرَ فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ لَبِسَهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا لَمْ يَلْبَسْهُ فِي الآخِرَةِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏

Chapter 26

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Making Images Of Living Beings, And The Prohibition Of Using Images That Are Not Subjected To Disrespect In Furnishings And The Like; The Angels (Peace Be Upon Them) Do Not Enter A House In Which There Is An Image Or A Dog

بَاب تَحْرِيمِ تَصْوِيرِ صُورَةِ الْحَيَوَانِ وَتَحْرِيمِ اتِّخَاذِ مَا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ غَيْرُ مُمْتَهَنَةٍ بِالْفَرْشِ وَنَحْوِهِ

'Asim al-Abwal reported on the authority Abu Uthman saying:'Umar wrote to us when we were in Adharba'ijan saying: 'Utba b. Farqad, this wealth is neither the result of your own labour nor the result of the labour of your father, nor the result of the labour of your mother, so feed Muslims at their own places as you feed (members of your family and yourselves at your own residence), and beware of the life of pleasure, and the dress of the polytheists and wearing of silk garments, for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade the wearing of silk garments, but only this much, and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his. forefinger and middle finger and he joined. them (to indicate that only this much silk can be allowed in the dress of a man). 'Asim said also: This is what is recorded in the lette., (sent to us), and Zuhair raised his two fingers (to give an idea of the extent to which silk may be used).

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ يُونُسَ، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الأَحْوَلُ، عَنْ أَبِي، عُثْمَانَ قَالَ كَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا عُمَرُ وَنَحْنُ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ يَا عُتْبَةَ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ كَدِّكَ وَلاَ مِنْ كَدِّ أَبِيكَ وَلاَ مِنْ كَدِّ أُمِّكَ فَأَشْبِعِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فِي رِحَالِهِمْ مِمَّا تَشْبَعُ مِنْهُ فِي رَحْلِكَ وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّنَعُّمَ وَزِيَّ أَهْلِ الشِّرْكِ وَلَبُوسَ الْحَرِيرِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنْ لَبُوسِ الْحَرِيرِ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏ إِلاَّ هَكَذَا ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ وَرَفَعَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِصْبَعَيْهِ الْوُسْطَى وَالسَّبَّابَةَ وَضَمَّهُمَا قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ قَالَ عَاصِمٌ هَذَا فِي الْكِتَابِ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَرَفَعَ زُهَيْرٌ إِصْبَعَيْهِ ‏.‏

Chapter 27

Chapter: It Is Disliked To Take Dogs And Bells On A Journey

باب كَرَاهَةِ الْكَلْبِ وَالْجَرَسِ فِي السَّفَرِ ‏.‏

This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of 'Asim.

حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ، كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ عَاصِمٍ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي الْحَرِيرِ‏ بِمِثْلِهِ ‏.‏

Chapter 28

Chapter: It Is Disliked To Hang Garlands On The Necks Of Camels

باب كَرَاهَةِ قِلاَدَةِ الْوَتَرِ فِي رَقَبَةِ الْبَعِيرِ ‏.‏

Abu 'Uthman reported:While we were with 'Utba b. Farqad there came a letter of 'Umar (containing the instructions) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said: None should wear silk (with the exception of so much) but he will have nothing of it in the Hereafter. Abu 'Uthman said: To the extent of two fingers which are close to the thumb, and I was shown the (silk) borders of the Tayalisa mantle (which were about two fingers in breadth and I saw them.

وَحَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، - وَهُوَ عُثْمَانُ - وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ كِلاَهُمَا عَنْ جَرِيرٍ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لإِسْحَاقَ - أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ التَّيْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ فَجَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ لاَ يَلْبَسُ الْحَرِيرَ إِلاَّ مَنْ لَيْسَ لَهُ مِنْهُ شَىْءٌ فِي الآخِرَةِ إِلاَّ هَكَذَا ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ وَقَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ اللَّتَيْنِ تَلِيَانِ الإِبْهَامَ ‏.‏ فَرُئِيتُهُمَا أَزْرَارَ الطَّيَالِسَةِ حِينَ رَأَيْتُ الطَّيَالِسَةَ ‏.‏

Chapter 29

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Striking Or Branding Animals On The Face

باب النَّهْىِ عَنْ ضَرْبِ الْحَيَوَانِ، فِي وَجْهِهِ وَوَسْمِهِ فِيهِ ‏.‏

The previous hadith is narrated likewise through another chain of transmitters.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ، قَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ جَرِيرٍ ‏.‏

Chapter 30

Chapter: The Permissibility Of Branding Animals Anywhere But On The Face, And This Is Recommended In The Case Of Animals Given As Zakat Ot Jizyah

بَاب جَوَازِ وَسْمِ الْحَيَوَانِ غَيْرِ الْآدَمِيِّ فِي غَيْرِ الْوَجْهِ وَنَدْبِهِ فِي نَعَمْ الزَّكَاةِ وَالْجِزْيَةِ

Qatada reported:I heard Abe 'Uthman al-Nahdi as saying: There came to us a letter of 'Umar as we were in Adharba'ijan or in Syria in the company of 'Utba b. Farqad (and the letter ran thus): After (usual praise and glorification of Allah) it is stated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has forbidden the use of silk btit to the extent of these two fingers, and Abu Uthman said: We at once understood by these words that he meant (silk) patterns on (the cloth).

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَابْنُ، بَشَّارٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الْمُثَنَّى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ، بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عُثْمَانَ النَّهْدِيَّ، قَالَ جَاءَنَا كِتَابُ عُمَرَ وَنَحْنُ بِأَذْرَبِيجَانَ مَعَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ فَرْقَدٍ أَوْ بِالشَّامِ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلاَّ هَكَذَا إِصْبَعَيْنِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عُثْمَانَ فَمَا عَتَّمْنَا أَنَّهُ يَعْنِي الأَعْلاَمَ‏.‏

Chapter 31

Chapter: It Is Disliked To Shave Part Of The Head And Leave Part

باب كَرَاهَةِ الْقَزَعِ ‏.‏

This hadith has been reported on the authority of Qatada but there is no mention of the words of Abd Uthman.

وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذٌ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ - حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ قَوْلَ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ ‏.‏

Chapter 32

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Sitting In The Street; And Giving The Street Its Rights

باب النَّهْىِ عَنِ الْجُلُوسِ، فِي الطُّرُقَاتِ وَإِعْطَاءِ الطَّرِيقِ حَقَّهُ ‏.‏

Suwaid b. Ghafala said:'Umar addressed us at a place known as Jabiya (Syria) and he said: Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) forbade us the wearing of silk but to the extent of two or three fingers or four fingers.

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْقَوَارِيرِيُّ، وَأَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا - مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ الشَّعْبِيِّ، عَنْ سُوَيْدِ بْنِ غَفَلَةَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، بْنَ الْخَطَّابَ خَطَبَ بِالْجَابِيَةِ فَقَالَ نَهَى نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم عَنْ لُبْسِ الْحَرِيرِ إِلاَّ مَوْضِعَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثٍ أَوْ أَرْبَعٍ ‏.‏

Chapter 33

Chapter: The Prohibition Adding Hair Extensions, Having Them Added, Tattooing, Being Tattooed, An-Namisah, Al-Mutanamisah, Separating Teeth, And Changing The Creation Of Allah

بَاب تَحْرِيمِ فِعْلِ الْوَاصِلَةِ وَالْمُسْتَوْصِلَةِ وَالْوَاشِمَةِ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَةِ وَالنَّامِصَةِ وَالْمُتَنَمِّصَةِ وَالْمُتَفَلِّجَاتِ وَالْمُغَيِّرَاتِ خَلْقِ اللَّهِ

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Qatada with the same chain of transmitters.

وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرُّزِّيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ ‏.‏

Chapter 34

Chapter: Women Who Are Clothed Yet Naked, Turning Away From Righteousness And Leading Others Astray

باب النِّسَاءِ الْكَاسِيَاتِ الْعَارِيَاتِ الْمَائِلاَتِ الْمُمِيلاَتِ ‏.‏

Jabir b. Abdullah reported that one day Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) put on a cloak made of brocade, which had been presented to him. He then quickly put it off and sent it to 'Umar b. Khattab, and it was said to him:Messenger of Allah. why is it that you put it of immediately. whereupon he said: Gabriel forbade me from it (i. e. wearing of Ods garment), and 'Umar came to him weeping and said: Messenger of Allah you disapproved a thing but you gave it to me. What about me, then? Thereupon be (the Holy Prophet) Wd: I did not give it to you to wear it, but I gave you that you might sell it; and so he (Hadrat Umar) sold it for two thousand dirhams.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ، وَيَحْيَى بْنُ حَبِيبٍ، وَحَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ حَبِيبٍ - قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا وَقَالَ الآخَرُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ لَبِسَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَوْمًا قَبَاءً مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ أُهْدِيَ لَهُ ثُمَّ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ نَزَعَهُ فَأَرْسَلَ بِهِ إِلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ قَدْ أَوْشَكَ مَا نَزَعْتَهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ ‏ نَهَانِي عَنْهُ جِبْرِيلُ ‏ ‏.‏ فَجَاءَهُ عُمَرُ يَبْكِي فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَرِهْتَ أَمْرًا وَأَعْطَيْتَنِيهِ فَمَا لِي قَالَ ‏ إِنِّي لَمْ أُعْطِكَهُ لِتَلْبَسَهُ إِنَّمَا أَعْطَيْتُكَهُ تَبِيعُهُ ‏ ‏.‏ فَبَاعَهُ بِأَلْفَىْ دِرْهَمٍ ‏.‏

Chapter 35

Chapter: The Prohibition Of Wearing A Garment Of Falsehood Etc., And Pretending To Have That Which Has Not Been Given To One

باب النَّهْىِ عَنِ التَّزْوِيرِ، فِي اللِّبَاسِ وَغَيْرِهِ وَالتَّشَبُّعِ بِمَا لَمْ يُعْطَ ‏.‏

'Ali reported:A silk cloak was presented to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). and he sent it to me and I wore it. but then found some sign of disapproval upon his face, whereupon he said: I did not send it to you that you wear it, but I sent it to you so that you might tear it and make out head dream for your women.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ - حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي عَوْنٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا صَالِحٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ أُهْدِيَتْ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم حُلَّةُ سِيَرَاءَ فَبَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَىَّ فَلَبِسْتُهَا فَعَرَفْتُ الْغَضَبَ فِي وَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ ‏ إِنِّي لَمْ أَبْعَثْ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا بَعَثْتُ بِهَا إِلَيْكَ لِتُشَقِّقَهَا خُمُرًا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏
